Chicken
Purchasing
Manitoba’s registered farmers sell their chickens to Dunn-Rite Foods, Granny’s Poultry and Waldner Meats. These companies supply fresh and frozen chicken to butcher shops, grocery stores and restaurants throughout Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.
All meat chickens from registered Manitoba chicken farms are health-inspected, free-roaming, grain-fed and raised without the use of hormones or steroids.

The best way to tell if your chicken is done is to take its temperature using a digital meat thermometer. Digital thermometers take the temperature reading at the tip of the thermometer probe so they work well for both thick and thin foods.
What’s the right temperature?
| TYPE OF CHICKEN | TEMPERATURE* |
|---|---|
| Bone in chicken pieces | 170F (77C) |
| Boneless chicken pieces | 170F (77C) |
| Ground chicken (burgers, meatloaf) | 175F (80C) |
| Whole chicken, stuffed or unstuffed | 180F (83C) |
For the best eating experience. Give it a rest!
Let your chicken rest after you take it out of the oven or off the grill. Loosely cover the chicken with foil and let it sit at room temperature so the juices can settle back into the meat. Boneless chicken pieces need about 5 minutes, bone in pieces 7-10 minutes, and whole birds about 15-20 minutes. Your chicken will be juicy, tender and delicious, and your family will thank you.
