Our Farms

Manitoba Chicken Producers (MCP) is a not-for-profit, farmer-run organization representing 118 registered farms raising meat (broiler) chickens. Meat chickens from these farms are grain fed, free roaming, and raised without hormones or steroids. MCP is fully funded by the farmers and receives no grants or subsidies from any level of government. MCP is responsible for ensuring registered farms raise enough chicken to meet consumer demand, and for ensuring farmers get a fair price for the chickens they raise.

Food We Eat

Manitoba’s registered chicken farms participate in national food safety and animal care programs. The simple principle behind these programs is for farmers to “say what they do, do what they say, and prove it.” These programs are mandatory for Manitoba farms and each farm is audited annually. There are stiff penalties if farms do not adhere to the standards of each program. Click here to learn more about how meat chickens are raised in Manitoba.

Jobs We Need

Almost all of the registered chicken farms in Manitoba are family owned and operated. Many have been in the family for generations. But it takes more than just farmers to raise chickens and get them from the farm to your table. There are Manitobans working for feed companies, equipment suppliers and manufacturers, financial institutions, hatcheries, processing companies, grocery stores and restaurants, and trucking companies. It also takes veterinarians, animal scientists, accountants, and farm auditors.

Economy We Create

In 2010 Manitoba’s registered chicken farms produced 42.5 million kilograms of chicken, valued at over $62 million dollars. The most important markets for Manitoba chicken are Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. Some Manitoba chicken is sold in other provinces. Less than 4% is exported out of Canada.
